Most of us who have been in the field for any length of time have seen "goodies" just lying around waiting to be picked up. There are a couple of different ways that you can approach this type of situation.
Option 1 (Preferred): GPS the location (take photographs if possible) of the artifacts and then contact the local agency involved. If it is a single artifact located in a well-traveled area, you may want to move it (I can hear the groans now) to an area where the artifact won't be damaged or "relocated" to someone's personal collection. Next, GPS and photograph the artifact in both spots and send the collected information to the proper agencies.
Option 2: (Deep trouble): You can pick up the artifact and take it home, but first you just might want to view the video clip "The Curse of the Stolen Artifacts" by clicking anywhere on the map below.
